New EU Regulations: What You Need to Know About PPWR & EUDR
The European Union is introducing new regulations that may affect businesses selling and shipping certain products to the EU. Two new regulations to be aware of are the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
While these regulations may sound complicated, there are no immediate changes to the Chit Chats shipping process or platform. Here’s what you need to know.
Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
Starting August 12, 2026, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduced new EU-wide requirements for packaging placed on the EU market. This can include product packaging as well as e-commerce packaging such as boxes, mailers, and other shipping materials.
What does this mean for Chit Chats clients?
For now, PPWR has very little impact on the Chit Chats shipping process.
- You do not need to attach PPWR documentation to their packages.
- You should keep any relevant packaging documentation and information on hand in case they are asked to provide it in the future.
- You do not need to make any changes to how they create or ship their Chit Chats shipments.
If you’re a business shipping to the EU, we recommend keeping any applicable packaging information and documentation organized and readily available.

EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is designed to help prevent products linked to deforestation and forest degradation from being placed on the EU market.
The regulation applies to certain products containing or made from specific regulated industries, including:
- Cattle
- Cocoa
- Coffee
- Palm oil
- Rubber
- Soy
- Wood
It can also apply to certain products made from these materials, such as chocolate, leather goods, furniture, and paper products.
When does EUDR apply?
The effective date depends on the size of your business:
- Large and medium-sized businesses: December 30, 2026
- Small businesses: June 30, 2027
*To qualify as a small business, a company must meet at least two of the following criteria:
- Less than €10 million in annual turnover
- Less than €5 million in total balance sheet value
- Fewer than 50 employees
Most Chit Chats clients that are small businesses will not be affected by the EUDR requirements until June 30, 2027.
Does EUDR apply to my shipment?
The first step is to determine whether the product you’re shipping contains or is made from one of the industries covered by the EUDR.
If your product isn’t made from or doesn’t contain a regulated commodity, EUDR does not apply to that shipment.
If your product is covered, you’ll eventually need to meet the applicable EUDR due diligence requirements. This may include providing a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) reference number or applicable declaration identifier for customs clearance.
Chit Chats will update our platform to support the required reference information once it becomes necessary for customs declarations.
What should I do now?
For most Chit Chats clients, there is nothing you need to change right now.
If you ship products to the EU:
- Check whether your products or packaging may fall under PPWR or EUDR.
- Keep any relevant documentation and information on hand.
- If you’re shipping products covered by EUDR, make sure you understand your obligations before the regulation applies to your business.
- Keep an eye out for updates from Chit Chats as these regulations take effect.
